Text Inserter Compatibility

What do I need to know to install a Text Inserter?

No technology can break into a POS system and force data out. The POS must cooperate. The installer must identify some data which comes out of the POS naturally and is suitable for Loss Prevention.  The most common way to get suitable data is from a DB9 serial port set up for a customer pole display or a real time journal printer (not a receipt printer, Text Insertion from a receipt is a solution of last resort because receipts are usually not real time).

You should think of the Text Inserter like this: It is a Pole Display or a Journal Printer which just happens to "print" on CCTV Video.

It is simple to add Text Insertion to almost any POS system that has a serial port to support either a Pole Display or Journal Printer. POS system developers are now adding dedicated output for Text Inserters which work even better. They go by such names as "Serial Security Interface", "Video Interface", "Camera Interface" or similar sounding names.

If you do not see your POS system, please call or email for assistance. Please be ready with the Cash Register or POS manufacturer name and model number. Also find the exact name of any software is essential for PC based systems. Equally important is the brand and model of the pole display used or which can be supported by the cash register or POS system. If the POS has a JOURNAL printer please specify the brand and model.

For applications such as metal recycling and waste management, we even support electronic scales.

Before you order, please double check your interface type.

Pole displays come in both serial and parallel. Please check to see if your is display is connected to a COM port (serial DB9 male) or an LPT1 parallel port (usually DB25 female) on the Point of Sale system.

Printers come in both serial and parallel. Serial printers usually have a DB25 female connector. Parallel printers usually have a 36 pin Centronics connector.

There are three solutions depending on the Customer Pole Display type you may have or if there is no Customer Pole Display.

For Epson pole display daisy chained with receipt printer.  Use KIT_VR2004_EPSON_POLE_DISPLAY
split off of the RJ45 connectors of an Epson pole display and the receipt printer. Set the Text Inserter for EPSON (DB9 DEV: EPSON POLE) command set.

For models POSIFLEX: PD2100, PD2200, PD2500, PD2601, PD2501, PD2502, PD2503, PD302 and PD305. POSIFLEX displays support multiple command sets. Set the Text Inserter for DB9 DEV: to match the pole display command set.  Call us for a quote to purchase the VR2004_LOGIC_CONTROLS kit and a handshake adapter part number HANDSHAKE_DB9F_CTS_RTS.

If there is no pole display, set up a COM port for a pole display of type Logic Controls. Use the proprietary 10 pin conductor RJ45 to DB9 adapter cable as necessary. Call us for a quote to purchase the VR2004_LOGIC_CONTROLS kit and a handshake adapter part number HANDSHAKE_DB9F_CTS_RTS.

The POS owner must get any necessary Tech support from POSitouch if required.

We were told that if you have only a pole display without printer you could disable handshake with the file CHKPRTR.SCR with "NNNNNNNN" in the file. This file is in the POSitouch directory.  If the handshaking is disabled then a Handshake adapter to loop back flow control is not required.

Regarding Many Sharp ECRS

ER-A410, ER-A420, ER-A430

These registers do not output price information on the kitchen printer report and are not ideal for Text Insertion.
DB9 interface, Handshake Adapter and J4 to J2 internal jumper wire. Only models which can support a remote kitchen printer may work.

Important: VRX Company cannot guide programing of these registers. The end user must agree to get what ever tech support from his/her Sharp sales person as required.
Before connecting the VR2004 Text Inserter and calling VRX Company for tech support , the end user should get the cash register serial port set up and working with a CVM or an Epson printer.  We must charge for any tech support to make this cash register support happen.

Before any permanent wiring is installed, the installer of the Text Inserter should use a portable monitor or equivalent and test the Text Inserter with the cash register.
While we believe we can deliver the Text Inserter close to fully configured however, we cannot know everything about the cash register. Therefore the installer may have to optimize settings in the cash register and settings in the Text Inserter or remove the Text Inserter cover to optimize jumper settings.   We can support this activity for free but the end user will have to provide technical support as necessary.

If the end user would like to ship to us the register (with any accessories) and user manual we would be glad to try to work out all these issues in advance.

Connect the Text Inserter to the receipt printer with the following caution:

If no pole display is possible and the customer is willing to accept very fast text insertion not suitable for real time viewing, then use the receipt printer. For DB25 printer such as  Epson TM-T88 or Epson TMU950, Use our kit: KIT_VR2004_RUBY_JOURNAL

For DB9 serial printers like a Seiko use:

Set the cash register for real time receipt printing (not buffered) if possible.

To further improve compatibility with Text Insert, in the cash register setup, change the receipt formatting for little or no information on the footer. Move all footer information into the header.
